A trance state is typically produced when once meditates. There are other ways to invoke trance, but meditation is one of the easiest. You don't need to relax or let go. You actually don't have to do anything at all, except focus on your breath. Breath in for four seconds. Hold for four seconds. Breath out for four seconds. Hold for four seconds. Repeat for 45 minutes. Your thoughts will stray and that is fine. When your thoughts stray, gently return them to your breath. That's all there is too it. If you find yourself asking if you are in a trance state yet, then you are not in a trance state, and should continue to focus on your breath. "
