Bioluminescence is a type of chemiluminescence


The tiny ostracod is almost eaten by the much larger fish, but the cardinal fish spits the ostracod out once the ostracod begins to emit light. Exactly why this causes the cardinal fish to spit the ostracods isn't known, but there are theories.

As shown below, firefly convert firefly luciferin into an unstable 4-membered ring intermediate as highlight in red, followed by light generation. The light produced by firefly glow in a yellow-green color, at this spectrum the light has the least interference with other biological molecules. As result, in scientific researches, the firefly luciferase system is the most frequently used one among the 9 luciferase systems.
