There is a well-known story of a professor who stood in front of his class with an empty jar, and sand, pebbles and big rocks. How could he fit it all into the jar? 

When he tried to put in the sand and pebbles first, the big rocks wouldn’t fit. The big rocks—your major commitments and priorities—come first, and then you can fit in the smaller obligations (the sand and pebbles).

Family comes before friends, friends come before community, making a living comes before volunteering. For example, your child’s school recital takes precedence over an acquaintance’s wedding, and preparing properly for Shabbat comes before having guests. 

See which people and activities are really not that important to you, and let some go. By sacrificing the minor relationships, you’ll be able to invest more in the major ones.

Above all, you need to take care of yourself before you can take care of the world. As Hillel said, “If I am not for myself, who is for me?” Or as flight attendants put it, you need to put your oxygen mask on first before helping anyone else with his. 

This means eating right, getting enough sleep, exercising, and yes, enjoying yourself and doing things you like to do. 

Of course, there’ll be exceptions (when you have a newborn, you can’t expect eight hours of sleep . . .), but in general, you can’t fill anyone else up if you’re not full yourself. Spend your time on activities and with people who energize you, not drain you of energy.

The story goes that some time ago a man punished his 5-year-old daughter for wasting a roll of expensive gold wrapping paper. Money was tight and he became even more upset when the child pasted the gold paper so as to decorate a box to put under the Christmas tree.

Nevertheless, the little girl brought the gift box to her father the next morning and said, "This is for you, Daddy." The father was embarrassed by his earlier overreaction, but his anger flared again when he found the box was empty. He spoke to her in a harsh manner, "Don't you know, young lady, when you give someone a present there’s supposed to be something inside the package?"

The little girl looked up at him with tears in her eyes and said, "Oh, Daddy, it's not empty. I blew kisses into it until it was full." The father was crushed. He fell on his knees and put his arm around his little girl, and he begged her to forgive him for his unnecessary anger.

An accident took the life of the child only a short time later and it is told that the father kept that gold box by his bed for all the years of his life. And whenever he was discouraged or faced difficult problems he would open the box and take out an imaginary kiss and remember the love of the child who had put it there.

When the material first hit the market at the Tucson Gem Shows in 1990 it captivated jewelers and collectors with its amazing neon blue and green colors never before seen in the natural gem world. 

Gemological laboratories performed complex testing on the material and discovered that it was a natural Elbaite Tourmaline- therefore a sibling of Rubellite, Indicolite and Watermelon Tourmaline. 

Elbaite is normally achromatic- meaning the crystals are colorless unless there are trace elements present in the chemical formula. 

In the case of Paraiba Tourmaline the crystals contain trace amounts of copper (sometimes alongside gold, too) that give the crystals their unique color. 

Thus the GIA and AGTA adopted a technical name of “Cuprian Elbaite Tourmaline,” though jewelers, auction houses and collectors continued to use the term Paraiba Tourmaline when discussing and selling the material.

This stone is also called “evening emerald”, and the name “olivine” was given by A. Verner in 1790 to denote a green variety of the mineral, occurring in the basalts.

Magnesium iron silicate. The series ranges from the magnesium end member, Forsterite (Magnesium silicate), through the intermediary member, Olivine (also known as Chrysolite), to the iron end member, Fayalite (Iron silicate). Olivine is not scientifically classified by the IMA as an individual mineral species, but is rather recognized as a mineral group with the Forsterite and Fayalite end members. Fayalite and Forsterite create a solid solution series, and most specimens identified as Olivine fall somewhere in between this series, almost always leaning more towards Forsterite with a greater content of magnesium. Pure Forsterite is uncommon, and pure Fayalite is very rare.
