" The other day I was reading an article about a Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter named, Lyoto “the Dragon” Machida. (Pronounced, lee-oh’Toe ma-chee’da)
Basically the article was about his martial arts background in Shotokan karate, a Japanese karate style and Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
He has a very impressive MMA record of 16-1-0.
The excitement about this particular fighter is that he has been bringing back “stand-up fighting” from the domination of ground fighting that has been the predominant style in the MMA.
I think this is interesting because karate traditionally had the elements of “all” fighting, which included, knees, elbows, takedowns and grappling, that were essentially changed to make it safer in these modern times, usually for the purpose of point fighting or another words a sports oriented activity.

It is still this way to some degree in MMA, that is a sports minded fighting style, but with full contact and many less rules, much closer to original fighting systems.
What is even more interesting is that the karate legend, Joe Lewis, analyzed Mr. Machida’s style of fighting.
Which to me felt very reminiscent to our English martial arts.
He says, “…three factors emphasized in karate training which he (Machida) employs.
First his stances; they are defensive which forces your opponent to lead.
Thus, his opponents are forced to fight his fight. Next is range; he uses distance against them, denying them access to the pocket.
Therefore most attack from out of effective range. The third is his explosiveness.
No other art form perfects the trigger squeeze like old-school karate teaching.”

His fighting style and English martial arts clearly utilizes some similar principles.
Defensive by nature, not offensive.
Keeping distance that forces the opponent to use slower times to reach you which in turn denies the place, or “pocket”, as Mr. Lewis calls it. Utilizing explosive counter striking when the opponent is wide spaced and using a slow time, known as ‘swarming’ in our style.
The understanding and employment of these, among other principles of the true fight, are what allows you to be safe and the opponent to be hit.
These kinds of fighters, regardless of style, are always fun to watch as they utlize the principles and win!
