PINK FLOYD - Learning To Fly

Every normal banana you buy in the store is a Cavendish banana, and each one is an exact genetic copy of every other Cavendish. Their small seeds are sterile. You can't grow a new banana tree from it. (for that matter it isn't actually a true tree. A banana tree is actually the world's biggest herb). These replaced the only other mass produced commercial banana, the Gros Michael (the 'Big Mike') when a fungus disease took them all out beginning in the early 1900s. But your grandparents all ate the Big Mike. And the 'banana' flavor you can buy in a store is based on the Big Mike, which has a much more 'banana-like' flavor than the more bland Cavendish. The Cavendish too is on the way out. Eventually a similar Panama Blight fungus that took out the Big Mikes will crush the Cavendish too, maybe in the next 10-20yrs. So far nobody has been able to find a 3rd edible variety to mass produce that is not prone to the blight. This may be it for the world's most favorite fruit if they can't find one soon.

It appears they have almost fixed the Big Mike with variant SH-3142.
