In astrology, your life purpose is encoded in the north node and south node of the moon. The lunar nodes are directly opposite each other in the chart.
They aren’t planets, but rather mathematical points on the chart that fall in two opposite zodiac signs. For example, if your north node is in Capricorn, your south node will be in its opposite sign of Cancer, and so on.
The South Node reveals the gifts that you bring into this lifetime, your sweet spot, your comfort zone. You will be innately good in these areas of life, and may begin your early path based on your South Node leanings.
While this can bring a sense of satisfaction, it is unlikely to elevate you to Blissville. There’s a sense of “been there, done that” in the field of South Node activities.
And indeed you have: in many past lifetimes. The key is to use your South Node as a springboard into your North Node destiny, much like an expat living abroad will always feel most comfortable speaking her native language, even if she’s lived in her new country for many years.
The South Node is your horoscope hometown, perhaps not the place you want to settle permanently, but somewhere cozy to visit when you need to feel a sense of place or belonging.

The endless reoccurrence of these hours 11:11, 11:01, 11:10, 10:01, 10:11, 10:10, 1:01, 1:11 represents a positive connection and a gateway to the mysteries of the universe and beyond.
A trigger of remembrance - For many years the numbers 11:11 have been mysteriously appearing to people all over the world.
Often appearing on digital clocks, the sightings of 11:11 tend to occur during times of heightened awareness, having a most powerful effect on the people involved. This causes a reactivation of our cellular memory banks.
There’s a stirring deep inside, a hint of remembrance of something long forgotten. The appearance of 11:11 is also a powerful confirmation that we are on the right track, aligned with our highest Truth.
Throughout the years, I have personally encountered thousands of people all over the world who, have experienced repeated sightings of 11:11. They all want to know what is happening to them and why. What does the 11:11 signify?
11:11 is a pre-encoded trigger placed into our cellular memory banks prior to our descent into matter which, when activated, signifies that our time of completion is near.
This refers to the completion of duality. When the 11:11 appears to you, it is your wake-up call. A direct channel opens up between you and the Invisible. When this happens, it is time to reflect on whatever you are doing for a moment and Look Larger.
A transfer is in position. You can enter the Greater Reality if you wish pray or meditate and seed your future and also, you can be seeded by the Invisible. You can ask for help in some specific area of your life or simply listen quietly and receive a revelation.
The appearance of 11:11 is an always beneficial act of Divine Intervention telling you that it is time to take a good look around you and see what is really happening. It’s time to pierce the veils of illusion that keep us bound to an unreal world.
You have been chosen, because you are ready, to step into the Greater Reality. To lead the way for others into a new way of living, into a Greater Love. To ascend from duality into Oneness.
The 11.11 is the bridge to our vitality and oneness. It is our pathway into the positive unknown and beyond. This can presently be perceived as a crack between two worlds.
It is like a bridge which has the inherent potential of linking together two very different spirals of energy. As we unite together as One, bringing together our fragments of the key, we not only create the key, but we make visible the Doorway.
Thus this bridge functions as an invisible door or a doorway into the Invisible realm. The 11:11 is the bridge to an entirely different spiral of evolution. The symbol of 11:11 was pre-encoded into our cellular memory banks long ago.
Returning our cycle of incarnations upon the Earth. The 11.11 has rested dormantly within us since that faraway position under time-release mechanization, combined with sealed orders which would only open when the 11.11 was fully activated. It has been gently sleeping, awaiting the moment of triggering. And now the 11:11 is finally activated.
11:11 is the pre-encoded trigger and the key to the mysteries of the universe and beyond. Some of you have recognized this symbol as something of significance, yet have been unaware of its true meaning.
With the advent of digital clocks many years ago, the significance of 11:11 began to make itself felt, often appearing on clocks at times of accelerated awareness.
For those of you who have know that 11:11 was something special, we now need you to come forth into positions of leadership. For you are important parts of the key.
(20 July 2002 edition) titled: Getting tough on ageing: Scientists have found a gene on chromosome number 11, in mice, which may be involved in DNA repair.
This ties in with the theory that stem cells (found in bone marrow, for example) are responsible for the ageing process when they become 'useless' and non-resistant to DNA damage.
So by making stem cells more hardy, longevity can be increased. That this gene could be involved in DNA repair would be a major discovery, and the fact that it is located on chromosome number 11 and the correlation with the prolongation of life is incredible.
11 is a double digit and is therefore considered a Master or Power Number. In Numerology 11 represents impractical idealism, visionary, refinement of ideals, intuition, revelation, artistic and inventive genius, avant-garde, androgynous, film, fame, refinement fulfilled when working with a practical partner. Eleven is a higher octave of the number two .
It carries psychic vibrations and has an equal balance of masculine and feminine properties. Because eleven contains many gifts such as psychic awareness and a keen sense of sensitivity, it also has negative effects such as treachery and betrayal from secret enemies. Many associate 11:11 with a wake-up code/alarm as they see it on digit clocks and watches.
It can also be seen as a key to unlock the subconscious mind, our genetic encoded memories, that we are spirits having a physical experience, not physical beings embarking on a spiritual experience.
11:11 or derivatives of these numbers, 111 and 11, are digits that repeat in time thus a metaphor for reality as patterns that repeat in time for us to experience. This can refer to the rise and fall of civilizations, our personal experiences and lessons, loops in time. They are cycles of time that create and recreate following the blueprint.
Ellie and 11:11 .... In 1991, when I was hosting the talk show "The Metaphysical Experience", a woman named Solara was my guest. Her topic was Activation of the 11:11 Doorway. It was all about ascension and the beginning of awareness of the 11:11 code.
A golden eagle tries to fly away with a kid in Montreal, Canada.
In 1995, a Crystalinks' reader named Joe emailed about his experiences with the numbers 111:111, hence the file you are reading was first created and in so doing I took a long hard look at this phenomena experienced by those around me.
Each time Joe was about to go through another major spiritual awakening, an epiphany of some kind, those numbers would appear in his physical experience to signal the upcoming change. The numbers say, "Pay attention!"
11 represents spiraling twin strands of human DNA moving into higher frequency of consciousness. 11 represents balance.
11+11=22=4=Time. 22 is a Master or Masonic Number.
Some souls see a Golden Age emerging, as told by the ancient prophets. Gold refers to Alchemy , the alchemical changes that are taking place in our bodies in the evolution of consciousness.
Reality as a geometric design is based on numbers (universal language) that repeat in cycles to create the linear time experiment. In Pythagorean Numerolgy, a cycle is based on 9. 9=End. 9/11= end of the DNA biogen(et)ic program running at the moment.
"You will experience a sudden awakening after which reality is never the same. You are going to create clarity, healing and balance for yourself. Do not expect others in your life to be on this journey with you. It is yours alone as it is for most souls. You will have to seek new friends of like mind who are also being triggered by the digits.
Once you open the Digital Door, there is no going back. Your soul will automatically and quickly move you from level to level of experience until you 'get it'.
Your consciousness is expanding and therefore you will, manifest faster and with greater comprehension, becoming more aware of the meaning of synchronicities that will become more and more frequent.
They are created by your soul creates to help you remember that you are a soul spark in a physical program that is about to end, evolve back to higher consciousness."
Once you see your numeric codes, you have activated something in your DNA codes and they will continue to appear until you 'get the message' ... it is 'time' to move on.
Upon seeing your digit encoded numbers, you may feel a sense of urgency or related emotions. Chill out! For NOW there is TIME!
The numbers usually signal changes in the patterns of your life. They may confirm something that you are experiencing whenever the numbers appear to you.
You may dream also about the numbers, linked with things you do not as yet understand, or wake up at the same time every night with those numbers on your digital clock, ie. 11:11

Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it.
Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many.
Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books.
Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders.
Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations.
But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it. Siddhārtha Gautama Buddha

Study Reveals Many Crocodile Species Can Gallop, And They Are Fast - Even on land, crocodiles are no fish out of water. While these reptiles might look lazy and slow sunning on the bank, they can easily pick up speed when necessary, and a scary number can gallop or bound like a horse or a dog.
Bounding is when an animal's forelimbs hit the ground at the same time, with the back legs pushing off soon after; meanwhile, a gallop is a four-beat sequence whereby the fore and hindlimbs take turns landing.
Freshwater crocodiles from Australia (Crocodylus johnstoni) were historically thought to be the only species capable of doing both. But that's not actually true. Not even close.
It turns out even scientists have underestimated these creatures. Past research suggested only a handful of croc species were able to gallop, but a new study now adds five more to the mix, suggesting it's a whole lot more common than we ever thought.
Setting up video cameras around a zoological park in Florida, veterinary scientists analysed the gaits and speeds of 42 individuals from 15 species of crocodylia, which includes true crocodiles (family Crocodylidae), alligators and caimans.
While alligators and caimans were only able to trot on land, the team noticed eight species of crocodile capable of galloping or bounding.
They claim their study is the first to properly document galloping in the Philippine crocodile (Crocodylus mindorensis), the Cuban crocodile (C. rhombifer), the American crocodile (C. acutus), the West-African slender-snouted crocodile (Mecistops cataphractus) and the dwarf crocodile (Osteolaemus tetraspis).
Judging by how common this skill appears to be, there might even be more species that can do the same. There have already been anecdotal reports of galloping in species such as the marsh crocodile (C. palustris) and the New Guinea crocodile (C. novaeguineae).
"We were really surprised at one major thing – despite the different gaits crocodiles and alligators use, they all can run about as fast," John Hutchinson, a specialist in evolutionary biomechanics at the Royal Veterinary College (RVC), told PA.
No matter what their size, almost every species studied was able to reach nearly 18 kilometres per hour (11 mph), whether it be through trotting, galloping or bounding.
Only crocodiles, however, could use their legs asymmetrically, providing longer stride frequencies, especially among those with smaller body sizes. Why alligators cannot do this remains uncertain, but the researchers think this skill is probably ancestral and has less to do with speed than we thought.
"We suspect that bounding and galloping give small crocodiles better acceleration and manoeuvrability, especially useful for escaping from danger," explains Hutchinson. "It seems like alligators and caiman stand their ground rather than run away with an extreme gait."
Similar to other studies, the researchers think the crocodile's unusual asymmetrical gait came from a long-lost ancestor that lived on the land and had longer legs. If this is right, it could mean that the ancestors of the alligators somehow lost this ability or no longer express it.
But there's also another possibility that is rarely acknowledged: the common ancestor of today's 20 crocodile species may have actually evolved this asymmetrical gait as opposed to inheriting it.
Looking at related species could clear up some of the confusion – the gharial is an Asian fish-eating crocodile that lies outside the Crocodyloidea and Alligatoroidea ancestry, so if they can be shown to have asymmetrical gaits, it could shed light on how this skill appeared.
But similar to crocodiles and alligators, the gaits of the gharial's are not well documented, so there's clearly a lot more research that needs to be done.
"Together, our new observations of asymmetrical gaits and our broader dataset on locomotor kinematics spanning the clade Crocodylia considerably expand our knowledge of their behaviours and natural history," the authors conclude. "Importantly, this combined evidence strongly refutes the popular notion that only a few crocodiles use asymmetrical gaits."

In its natural habitat, cacao grows as a forest understory tree at altitudes up to 3,000 feet. In Hawaii, due to our higher latitude, the practical limits for cacao are likely 2,000 feet in leeward areas and 1,500 feet in windward areas.
European airlines were more lavish with their selections at this time, however, serving dishes that often included lobster salads, nicoise salads, ice creams, cheese selections with fruit, and champagne.
Aboard airlines like Qantas Empire Airways (the predecessor to Qantas) and Imperial Airways (the predecessor to British Airways), customers would dine on selections like lobster and sherbet, ox tongue, roasted chicken, foie grois, and peaches with Melba sauce.
Peregrine falcons, the world’s fastest-moving animal, are found on six continents around the world. Once an endangered species in the United States, their population comeback has been attributed to the widespread ban of DDT and other pesticides in the 1970s, and is a great success story in conservation. It is easy to see why these remarkable birds are so charismatic. Peregrine falcons hunt unknowing prey by diving from above at speeds of up to 200 miles per hour, maintaining an astounding degree of maneuverability and precision. However, conducting in-depth analysis of the aerodynamic properties of peregrine falcons is no easy task. Dives are infrequent in the wild, we usually only see them from a distance, and their blistering speeds make the birds difficult to film. Nevertheless, that is exactly what a team of researchers in Germany managed to do, and they recently published the results in PLOS ONE. https://blogs.plos.org/everyone/2014/03/01/falcon-physics-science-diving-peregrine-falcons/
Since this was also an era in which people flew so rarely, they wouldn't notice the repetitiveness of the food served onboard, meaning the menus rarely changed, according to Foss.
The 1930s: In the mid 1930s, kitchens became available aboard flying boats (fixed-winged seaplanes that had a hull to allow them to land on the water).
Aboard Pan Am’s Clippers, customers started to be served meals like beef, roasted right on the aircraft. “It would be taken in raw and roasted by the time you were halfway through your flight,” Foss told T+L.
Pan Am’s Clippers sometimes even had a dining room onboard, allowing customers to go in groups at a time to the dining room, where they’d be greeted with white tablecloths and a buffet, Foss said.
At the same time, United Airlines began refocusing their food concepts around 1935 by adding drinks like cocoa, adding linen and flowers onboard, and serving dishes that consisted of crabmeat cocktail, avocado and grapefruit salad, or lettuce and egg salads.
“What they realized on the long flights was that the meal was more than just a sustenance; it was a chance for the crew to engage with passengers and take what was considered a nerve-wrecking experience for the average person who had not flown much and turn it into comforting with food,” Foss said.
Sometimes, planes would even stop off for lunch, serving customers in the airline hangar or at picnic tables while the plane refueled before continuing with the remainder of the trip.
Since the restraints of visual navigation meant planes still flew closer to the ground at this time, there was more turbulence and a greater chance of spilling food and drink when served in the sky. Sometimes, it was simply easier for the staff to land the plane and conduct the service on the ground.
“As soldiers would embark on flights to Europe, the U.S. military began noticing that they weren’t arriving in good physical condition due to the lack of what they were able to eat and drink with cold military rations,” Foss said.
“They figured out that good food was a necessity for morale and decided hot food was needed for soldiers and it needed to be produced economically, which is where the frozen meal came in,” he added.
Not only did this mean that airlines could now start making more use of the meals they would make, but it allowed for more variety.
The 1950s: That variety took off in the 1950s, when airlines such as Northwest Airlines brought in spaces like their “Fujiyama Room,” a lounge that served up cut pineapples studded with shrimp, cheese, cherry tomatoes, and fruit squares.
American Airlines, based in Texas, served up chicken pie with a biscuit topping, while Southern Airlines served Louisiana dishes like a Creole shrimp salad remoulade.
Serving styles also got more elaborate, thanks to larger aircrafts with more storage space. Airline crew would roll trolleys down the aisle stacked with fresh salad, while charcuterie would be cut in the middle of the aisle for customers to see, according to Foss.
On Lufthansa, beer was served straight to customers out of a rolling keg, while Western Airlines had a service called the Hunt Breakfast where stewardesses would put on red coats and hats and walk through the cabin with hunting horns and the sounds of barking dogs before serving breakfast.
The 1960s: “The thing about the 1960s is you have the widespread adoption of jets, and that changes everything because of the fact that jets can go so much higher and faster and so you no longer need to find ways to keep people from getting bored because the flights are so much quicker,” Foss said.
This combined with aircrafts holding more seats meant airlines had to start finding ways to speed up the process of serving food in-flight.
This included changes like switching from glassware to plastic, because washing and storing them would take an extensive amount of time, or serving up foods that didn't need to be cut with a knife and fork (like pre-cut sandwiches).
Airlines also started serving options like Cornish game hens, since they could have them mostly deboned to cut down on eating time, while still serving what was considered a fad food item, Foss said.
The 1970s: “This is when you really have the peak of choice because of the fact that airlines really start going overboard with their first class flight offerings,”
Foss said. “You could have a meal in first class that took two hours to serve and clear, while a meal in economy could be served to the entire cabin in 30 minutes,” he added.
After World War II, charters and "non-sked" airlines came into the picture, offering low-cost flights to customers without a rigid schedule. According to Foss, this would cause delays and tie up airports, often frustrating airline customers who were paying high ticket prices.
So, airlines began creating a lower level of service, which was originally called tourist class and later known as economy, to deal with the competition.
Airlines like Japan Airlines began revving up their first class offerings, creating luxurious amenities like their Teahouse in the Sky, which offered hot and cold sake selections, various Japanese teas, and designs to resemble a traditional Japanese country inn.
No matter what was being served throughout the decades, Foss says the way meals were arranged and presented may have outranked the actual menus in importance.
“It was rare that people were interested in exotic foods at these times because there was some adrenaline associated when flying and tastes changed with pressurization," he said, "so it was more about beautiful arrangements and service because you start to eat with your eyes, as the saying goes."

After nearly two years of researching on the Bonneville Salt Flats, University of Utah geologist Brenda Bowen says she’s increasingly convinced that the ecosystem is more sensitive to human interactions than previously thought.
Bowen’s research still is incomplete — her first paper is expected out this fall, and a final report isn’t due until 2018. But the more data Bowen collects, she said, the more she’s convinced human activity is changing the landscape.
“To think that one part of the land use isn’t having an impact is overlooking the complexity of the system,” she said.
Bowen leads a multidisciplinary team of researchers investigating apparent changes in the Bonneville Salt Flats, which have shrunk in the past 30 years.
Since they began their studies in 2015 in response to outcry from car enthusiasts who use the landscape as a specialty race course, the scientists have investigated the flats’ weather, chemistry, geology, hydrology and even the microbial inhabitants.
Bowen said human interactions with the iconic landscape — including the land speed racing for which the flats are internationally known and the potash mine located near the race track — may be responsible for the changes. But the link between those interactions and changes to the landscape are less clear, she said.
Bowen said she also believes that natural processes, as well as climate change, are affecting the salt flats. “It’s not really mysterious that the landscape is changing, because of course it’s changing.
It would be more shocking to me if it weren’t changing,” she said. “It’s absolutely always changing, and many of these changes are linked to human activities, including racing.”

Bowen’s team planned to camp on the salt flats this weekend to collect samples of groundwater and observe the opening festivities for Speed Week, a yearly racing event which begins on Saturday. She and colleagues also plan to survey spectators at the event about their perceptions of the Bonneville Salt Flats.
Louise Noeth, a spokeswoman for the Save the Salt Coalition, a group made up mostly of land speed racing enthusiasts, said it was “absolutely reasonable” to assume human activity affects the salt flats.
But, Noeth said, the racing would not have a detrimental effect on the salt crust, had it not been weakened by decades of mineral extraction.
“I welcome what Brenda Bowen has to say,” Noeth said, “but she’s doing her study when Bonneville is on critical life support.”
Noeth said the land speed racing community does not blame Intrepid Potash, which extracts potassium from the salt flats, for the landscape’s decline. The company was doing what it was legally authorized to do, she said, and has cooperated with efforts to preserve the salt flats.
Rather, Noeth said, she believes mismanagement by the Bureau of Land Management is at least partly responsible for the salt flats’ condition.
“If the BLM had been better stewards, she said, ”we wouldn’t be talking about this. There wouldn’t be that human harm. You can let people into Yosemite, but you wouldn’t let them clear-cut.”
Hannah Cowan, a spokeswoman for the BLM, said the agency stands by its decisions on managing the Bonneville Salt Flats. While the agency understands the racers’ concerns, Cowan said, the BLM has been charged with managing multiple uses — including land speed racing and potash extraction.
Until the BLM sees the results of Bowen’s study, Cowan said the agency does not plan to make any changes to its current management of the area. “We’ve very supportive of the land speed racers and their concerns,” she said. “We understand that this is an important system to them, with generations of racers coming out and a lot of technology involved, and we respect that.”
Meanwhile, Noeth said, the racing community has taken matters into its own hands, by asking anyone who drives onto the salt flats during Speed Week to scrape the salt from their vehicles before departing.
https://www.facebook.com/erinjanus/
“We’ve had so many of the average racers who feel powerless to try to do anything against the federal government or a mining concern,” she said. “That’s what this program is all about — it’s like every single racer stopped before they got off the salt and essentially wiped their feet off at the doormat.”
If you really want to get off the grid in Indonesia then consider taking a trip to Papua (also known as Irian Jaya) where you can enjoy gorgeous scenery as well as some of the best diving in the world. Papua is technically part of Indonesia although it is not to be confused with Papua New Guinea which is a separate country. Located far away from central hubs in Indonesia like Java and Bali, Papua is covered is acres of gorgeous rainforest as well as tinkling rivers and gushing waterfalls. Visitors here can also enjoy long white sandy beaches as well as splendid wavy coral reefs, and anyone who likes diving is in for a treat as the visibility is so clear that you will be able to spot a huge variety of underwater life. Papua is also an important spot in terms of culture, and you can get a glimpse at the amazing tribal art here in the form of ancient cave paintings that still exist in some spots. Getting to Papua and getting around the island takes time, as many parts are only accessible by boat, but it is more than worth it to explore one of the last great untouched spots left in Indonesia, if not the world. https://www.thecrazytourist.com/15-best-places-visit-papua-indonesia/
Additionally, Save the Salt has been negotiating with Intrepid Potash to increase the amount of salt water — one of the company’s waste products — now being pumped onto the Bonneville Salt Flats each spring in an effort to rebuild the salt crust.
The salt flats on the mine’s side of the highway, Noeth said, have plenty of salt to spare. “Once you see that, you understand the imbalance,” she said. “You don’t need Brenda Bowen. You don’t need a scientist. All you need is your eyes and a little common sense.”
Several attempts by The Salt Lake Tribune to reach Intrepid Potash, headquartered in Denver, for comment were unsuccessful. Bowen said her team has no scientific data showing the salt water pumping is an effective method of growing the surface crust.
“If they want a stable salt crust that’s always exactly the same, maybe they should build a stadium because in nature you’re always going to have changes,” Bowen said. “If you expect it to be static and the same, you’re going to be disappointed.”

What Is the Balassa-Samuelson Effect? The Balassa-Samuelson effect states that productivity differences between the production of tradable goods in different countries.
1) explain large observed differences in wages and in the price of services and between purchasing power parity and currency exchange rates, and 2) it means that the currencies of countries with higher productivity will appear to be undervalued in terms of exchange rates; this gap will increase with higher incomes.
The Balassa-Samuelson effect suggests that an increase in wages in the tradable goods sector of an emerging economy will also lead to higher wages in the non-tradable (service) sector of the economy. The accompanying increase in prices makes inflation rates higher in faster-growing economies than it is in slow-growing, developed economies.
The Balassa-Samuelson explains differences in prices and incomes across countries as a result of differences in productivity. It also explains why using exchange rates vs. purchasing power parity to compare prices and incomes across countries will give different results. It implies that the optimal rate of inflation will be higher for developing countries as they grow and raise their productivity.
Understanding the Balassa-Samuelson Effect - The Balassa-Samuelson effect was proposed by economists Bela Balassa and Paul Samuelson in 1964. It identifies productivity differences as the factor that leads to systematic deviations in prices and wages between countries, and between national incomes expressed using exchange rates and purchasing power parity (PPP).
These differences had been previously documented by empirical data gathered by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania and are readily observable by travelers between different countries.
According to the Balassa-Samuelson effect, this is due to productivity growth differentials between the tradable and non-tradable sectors in different countries.
High-income countries are more technologically advanced, and thus more productive, than low-income countries, and the advantage of high-income countries is greater for the tradable goods than for the non-tradable goods.
According the law of one price, the prices of tradable goods should be equal across countries, but not for non-tradable goods. Higher productivity in tradable goods will mean higher real wages for workers in that sector, which will lead to higher relative price (and wages) in local non-tradable goods that those workers purchase.
Therefore, the long-run productivity difference between high- and low-income countries leads to trend deviations between exchange rates and PPP. This also means that countries with lower per capita income will have lower domestic prices for services and lower price levels.
The Balassa-Samuelson effect suggests that the optimal inflation rate for developing economies is higher than it is for developed countries. Developing economies grow by becoming more productive and using land, labor, and capital more efficiently.
This results in wage growth in both the tradable good and non-tradable good components of an economy. People consume more goods and services as their wages increase, which in turn pushes up prices.
This implies that an emerging economy that is growing by raising its productivity will experience rising price levels. In developed countries, where productivity is already high and not rising as quickly, inflation rates should be lower.

Gross domestic product (GDP) in purchasing power standards measures the volume of GDP of countries or regions. it is calculated by dividing GDP by the corresponding purchasing power parity (PPP), which is an exchange rate that removes price level differences between countries.
We may be eager to forget its lackluster 2012 remake, but the 1990 blockbuster Total Recall—which was released 25 years ago today—will live forever as a benchmark of gloriously silly science fiction. Even if you’ve rewatched the film ad nauseam on cable reruns, there are still a few facts you might not know about Arnold Schwarzenegger’s modern classic.
1. THE MOVIE WAS IN DEVELOPMENT FOR OVER A DECADE.
In 1976, fledgling screenwriters Ronald Shusett and Dan O’Bannon teamed up to adapt Philip K. Dick’s short story “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale.” The pair purchased the rights to the piece that year, but soon hit the first of many delays on the road to the screen.
Difficulties in reimagining the story as a film forced the pair to take a long break from the Dick story to work on a different project. (This distraction would prove rather fortuitous, ultimately becoming the screenplay for Ridley Scott’s Alien.) Over the course of many years, the screenplay went through more than 40 revisions.
2. TOTAL RECALL ALMOST COST THE WORLD THE FLY.
Even after Shusett and O’Bannon’s script found a patron in power producer Dino De Laurentiis, setbacks persisted as finding the right director proved challenging. David Cronenberg, then only on the precipice of his cult glory, was the first director assigned to the project.
He opted to take on Total Recall instead of an offer to direct a different film: The Fly, which was then snagged by commercial director Robert Bierman.
After spending a year working on the Dick adaptation, Cronenberg parted ways with production, handing the baton off to Tender Mercies director Bruce Beresford.
Cronenberg returned his sights to The Fly—a newly vacant job after the departure of Bierman due to a personal tragedy—ultimately making it his most iconic feature. (By the time Total Recall actually went into production, Beresford would be gone, too.)
3. CRONENBERG’S VERSION WAS CONSIDERED TOO FAITHFUL TO THE STORY.
As the story always goes, “creative differences” prompted Cronenberg to jump ship on Total Recall. While the director approached the project hoping to pay homage to Dick’s writing, its producers fostered a divergent vision that Cronenberg described as “Raiders of the Lost Ark Go to Mars.”
In a 2003 conversation with WIRED, the filmmaker remembered an odd exchange with the writing team: “Eventually we got to a point where Ron Shusett said, ‘You know what you've done? You've done the Philip K. Dick version.’ I said, ‘Isn't that what we're supposed to be doing?’”
4. SOME OF CRONENBERG’S CREATIONS REMAIN IN THE FINAL CUT.
Although the project shifted gears in a major way following Cronenberg’s departure, he did leave behind a few creative concepts that survived in the version of Total Recall that hit theaters. Chief among them was the community of Martian mutants—among the movie’s most memorable elements—including the major character Kuato.
5. THE QUAID/HAUSER CHARACTER WENT THROUGH AN IMAGE OVERHAUL.
Producer De Laurentiis’ initial vision of the film’s hero Douglas Quaid (originally named “Quail”)/Carl Hauser was decidedly more in line with Dick’s short story: A schlubby office drone who dreams of a more exciting life. With this characterization in mind, his first choice for the part was Richard Dreyfuss.
Over time, the desired machismo of the film’s leading man increased, prompting suggestions like William Hurt (courtesy of Cronenberg) and Patrick Swayze.
6. AT FIRST, ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER WAS TURNED DOWN FOR BEING TOO MANLY.
Despite the gradual growth of Quaid’s imagined virility, there was a limit to how far De Laurentiis was willing to stray from the original character.
He insisted that someone like Arnold Schwarzenegger was out of the question for the part and even turned down the Terminator star when Schwarzenegger expressed interest in the role.
7. TO GET THE PART, SCHWARZENEGGER LED ANOTHER COMPANY TO BUY THE MOVIE.
Schwarzenegger saw an opportunity when De Laurentiis’ production company, De Laurentiis Entertainment Group, went bankrupt. The actor convinced Carolco Pictures, with whom he had recently worked on Red Heat, to purchase the rights to Total Recall.
8. SCHWARZENEGGER HAD AN UNUSUAL AMOUNT OF CONTROL OVER PRODUCTION.
The coveted role of Quaid was not the only thing Schwarzenegger won in the transaction: In addition to being welcome to recruit the director of his choice (as a big fan of RoboCop, he picked Paul Verhoeven), Schwarzenegger maintained authority over all creative aspects of the film, script, production, and even elements of distribution.
For instance, Schwarzenegger took issue with the portrayal of the movie in its TriStar Pictures studio trailer, demanding that the company create and release a preview that better represented Total Recall.
Furthermore, when the actor was dissatisfied with the middling public awareness conjured by the movie in the weeks leading up to release, he convinced Carolco to invest more and more money into marketing until virtually everyone had heard of Total Recall.
9. THE MOVIE WAS ORIGINALLY RATED “X.”
The notorious “X” rating did not enjoy a particularly long tenure in the culture of United States cinema, starting in 1968 and lasting only up to 1990, when it gave way to “NC-17.”
Total Recall, heavy with graphic violence and soaked in bloodshed, would have been one of the last movies rated “X” were it not softened up late in production in the interest of achieving the more commercially viable “R” rating.
10. THE MOVIE’S FUTURISTIC VEHICLES WERE ACTUALLY MEXICAN PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION.
A memorable sequence involves Schwarzenegger’s character speeding away from his pursuers through a futuristic public train station. Though evocative of the film’s 2084 setting, the station and its vehicles were in fact actual features of the Mexico City public transportation system.
Minor touch-ups like sleek silver paint and television screens were applied to boost the ultramodern feel, but surprisingly little effort was needed to make the setting read as “of another time.”
11. TOTAL RECALL MARKED THE TRANSITION FROM OLD TO NEW SPECIAL EFFECTS.
The 1990 film was both one of the final movies to heavily utilize miniature effects and one of the first to employ computer-generated imagery. The former camp, which involves the projection of filmed shots inside miniature scale model sets, includes a number of Total Recall’s Mars scenes. In the latter category are only sequences featuring Schwarzenegger’s passage through a transit station’s X-ray machine.
The coming years would see CGI quickly become the predominant form of special effects used in Hollywood filmmaking, with the miniature method all but losing its place to more advanced techniques following Total Recall.
12. THE MARTIAN GUARDS WERE REAL AMERICAN SOLDIERS.
All of the actors portraying guards in the movie’s Mars scenes are in fact genuine American Marines and Naval officers.
13. ALMOST EVERYONE GOT SICK OR INJURED ON SET.
Multiple cast and crew members had to be hospitalized during production. First, a craft services foul-up resulted in almost everybody on set enduring a bout of food poisoning. Only Schwarzenegger, who ate privately catered food, and the fanatically health-conscious Shusett were exempt from the illness. Verhoeven required a steady stream of medication and fluids and regular access to a nearby ambulance in order to keep directing through the pain.
Next, associate producer Elliot Schick fell terribly ill due to the rampant air pollution of Mexico City. Finally, the least surprising accident of the lot: Schwarzenegger repeatedly cut and damaged his hand, even breaking his finger at one point, during shooting of the film’s innumerable punching stunts.
14. TOTAL RECALL WAS, POSSIBLY, THE MOST EXPENSIVE MOVIE EVER MADE AT THE TIME OF ITS PRODUCTION.
Although exact accounts of the Total Recall budget are elusive, official estimates have the film costing around $65 million. This neighborhood makes it one of the most—if not the most—expensive movies produced by 1990.
15. THE MOVIE WON AN OSCAR.
By winning the Special Achievement Award for Visual Effects at the 63rd annual Academy Awards, Total Recall became the first—and to date only—Philip K. Dick film adaptation to win an Oscar.
Total Recall was also the final live-action picture to receive the Special Achievement prize; the only film to win since has been Toy Story, recognized five years later for its advancements in computer animation.

The Ace of Swords tarot card is like a rocket right after it has been launched. A remarkable achievement, but whether or not that’s a good thing depends on the payload.
It may take a crew of explorers on a journey to explore new worlds. It can place a communications satellite into orbit, connecting billions of people with one another.
Or it could carry a nuclear warhead and cause immeasurable suffering. Bottom line? The energetic power of The Ace of Swords should not be underestimated and it is the proverbial double edged sword.
In the Tarot, Swords are associated with the eanings and the powers of the intellect. Pure reason is neither good nor bad. Cutting through blind faith and superstition, it can clear the way to true spirituality. But it can also be used to manipulate and deceive others. In the same sense, a Sword can be used to fight tyranny or murder others in the name of an unjust cause. Like the human mind, it is a tool. How you use it is just as important as the quality of its steel and the sharpness of its edge.
Hey, wait a minute? How can something as boring as rational thought make you spiritual? Actually, there’s a whole branch of philosophy dedicated to just that problem. It’s called metaphysics.
The symbolism in the Ace of Swords card explains the concept beautifully. Barren mountain range, the limits of what you know and think is possible, stretches out across the bottom portion of the Ace of Swords card. The glaciers are dreams and hopes that have frozen in the harsh climate of physical reality.
Maybe you’ve resigned yourself into thinking that this is all there is to life. That’s when the divine hand presents you with a path to higher understanding.
At the end of this path are peace, symbolized by the palm leaf, and success, the olive branch. The crown on the Ace of Swords represents spiritual understanding. The path itself is narrow and steep: it is the edge of the sword.
In a reading, the Ace of Swords card shows a major breakthrough or insight. The Ace of Swords also tells you that a major decision you are about to make may have life changing consequences. Remember that swords are not toys.
An unsheathed sword will quickly change the tone of any conversation – just like in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, where it’s all fun and games until someone draws his blade.
Committing yourself to a spiritual life is very much like drawing a sword. Once you’ve made the decision to take the first step on your journey, there’s no going back. You must see it through to the end.
Swords are associated with intellect and reason: that’s your way of knowing and understanding the world. The first look behind the curtain changes everything. You can never see the world again as it was before – no matter how much you’d like to.
This means that the Ace of Swords is also a card of courage. The Ace of Swords also points to important opportunities that are coming your way, perhaps in the form of sudden insights or inspirations.
Sometimes, the Ace of Swords tarot card warns of a potential conflict situation. But in that case, you will have the advantage. If you’re willing to take the initiative and act quickly, your efforts will be crowned with success.
You should always keep in mind that being a good winner is just as important as being a good loser. Once the fight is over, there’s no need for rubbing salt into your opponent’s wounds.
Because whatever happens afterwards will draw at least as much attention as the knockout punch you delivered. It’s wise to make sure this attention is positive.
If you have recently experienced a setback, you’ll see the silver lining of your situation soon. As long as you’re alive, you are never truly defeated. The things you may have lost may have actually been holding you back, keeping you from living up to your true potential.
Now that these bonds are no longer holding you down, you can spread your wings and fly! Ace of Swords Reversed Tarot Card Meanings - When the Ace of Sword tarot is reversed, it comes down hard. It won’t miss its mark. If it strikes for you and not at you, that’s good news.
In the best case scenario, a hard fight has ended quickly. Your foot planted firmly on your opponent’s back, you are now posing for those trophy photos. Congratulations!
But the Ace of Swords tarot card also warns that your sword has two edges, and both are razor sharp. So be careful how you use it. You could cut yourself.
For example, during a heated discussion or argument, you may get too fired up about proving that you’re right and the other person is wrong. Onlookers may end up siding with your opponent, just because you’re acting like a jerk.
Swords deal with rational understanding. When reversed, the Ace suggests that you may be confused about a particular issue. Gather more information and take some time to reflect before you make an important decision.
This is especially important, if you have received spiritual communications. They tend to be notoriously cryptic, and you should not take them literally – especially if the images are vivid or disturbing.
The Death card of the Major Arcana, for example, can be a frightening sight. Ask yourself how many times you’ve seen it appear in a reading. Okay. How many times have you actually died since then?
As with the Tarot, the images of your visions are symbolic. To understand their true meaning, you’ll need to learn how to interpret them correctly. Otherwise, you’ll become a victim of your own imagination.
When the Ace of Swords tarot card is reversed, the crown becomes a vessel. The sword is lowered into it, causing the olive and palm branches to grow upward.
From this perspective, the Ace of Swords becomes a card of unexpected wealth. The Ace of Swords can also suggest that a child may be on the way.
The Ace of Swords Tarot Card Metaphysical Correspondences: Aces correspond to the Number 1. Kabbalistically, this number represents the divine spark.
In traditional numerology, it is associated with the light and radiance of the sun. Here, the combined energies communicate the essence of air and the sharp intellect attributed to the sword.
